Protein Functions

Food: a source of protein for the body

The main functions of proteins

- Construction of new tissues of the human body.

- They act in the transport of substances such as oxygen.

- They act on the body's defense system, neutralizing and fighting viruses, bacteria and other foreign elements. Remember that antibodies are made up of proteins.

They act as catalysts for chemical reactions that occur in the body of humans. Enzymes perform this important function.

- They are present in the composition of various fluids produced by the body, such as breast milk, sperm and mucus.

- Food, when ingested, provides energy to the human body.

- Structural proteins (eg tubulin) are responsible for giving strength and elasticity to tissues.

- They act in the regulation of hormones.

- The proteins found in the plasma membrane act as receptors, sending signals so that the cell can perform its vital functions.
