Monosaccharides

Fruits: High in Fructose (Monosaccharide)

What are

Monosaccharides are simple carbohydrates as they do not undergo the hydrolysis process. These organic compounds, therefore, are polymerized carbohydrates. Most monosaccharides have from 3 to 6 carbon atoms. They are an important source of energy for the functioning and maintenance of the human body.

Main monosaccharides:

- Fructose: present in most fruits and also in honey. Its main function is to provide energy to the human body.

- Glucose: Also has energy function. Also found in honey and fruits.

- Galactose: present in lactose (milk sugar). Provides energy for the human body.

- Ribose: make up the structure of RNA (ribonucleic acid).
